TrueCrypt is a software system for establishing and maintaining an on-the-fly-encrypted drive. On-the-fly encryption means that data are automatically encrypted or decrypted right before they are loaded or saved, without any user intervention. No data stored on an encrypted volume can be read (decrypted) without using the correct password or correct encryption key. Until decrypted, a TrueCrypt volume appears to be nothing more than a series of random numbers. The entire file system is encrypted (i.e., file names, folder names, contents of every file, and free space).
This software is highly recommended for securing data on laptops.
TrueCrypt performs the following tasks:
- Creates a virtual encrypted disk within a file and mounts it as a real disk.
- Encrypts an entire partition or storage device such as USB flash drive or hard drive.

Custom slideshows are a great way to display your favorite photos and videos to friends and family. PhotoStage Slideshow Producer shows that slideshow makers don't need to be difficult to use to produce great results.
The best sign of a well-designed user interface is when you can jump into a program without having to consult the help feature first. PhotoStage Slideshow Producer has just such an interface. However, should you need it; a link to an ample online Help page is available. PhotoStage's process is broken down into steps so you can't go wrong. We started first by adding our media files, which included a mix of digital photos and a video. From there, we were able to add effects to each file, including the ability to crop, resize, and change the hue. But you can take it all a step further and add effects that turn your images into old film, oil paintings, negatives, sepia, and more. Our next step was to add transitions, such as Cross Fade, Revealing From Top to Bottom, and so on. We were pleasantly surprised to find that PhotoStage offers a narration feature that let us add our own music to our slideshow; you can even record your own voice, if you have a microphone. The Save step gave us numerous options for saving our newly created slideshow, including saving it as a Flash file, DVD movie, or a data disc, or we could save it to our hard drive or portable device. We saved our slideshow to our desktop. It took a few seconds for it to save, but in no time, we were able to play our newly created slideshow back.
PhotoStage Slideshow producer will appeal to users of all skill levels. It installs desktop icons without your permission, but it uninstalls cleanly. We highly recommend it.

YouTube Downloader is a popular, free program that enables you to download and convert online videos (legal content, to which you have the rights) for later viewing on your desktop or mobile device. It can convert files to MOV, MP4, 3GP, WMV, AVI, or MP3.
The name "YouTube Downloader" is terribly misleading because the program, in fact, downloads a whole lot more than just YouTube videos. On the developer's site, you can find an extensive list of additional supported sites including Facebook and Vimeo. This wide net of support easily pushes YouTube Downloader to the top of its category.
When you find a video you'd like to download, copy the URL of the video page and open YouTube Downloader. From there, you'll notice that the program automatically pastes the URL into the appropriate field. Choose your desired Download quality (Best Available is a nice option) and your destination folder, then hit Download. Once your download is finished, hit the Play tab to watch. The Convert tab lets you export to a different file format for playing elsewhere, and gives you a convenient mini editor for making minor alterations before your export. You can change video volume (or remove audio altogether) and splice footage by setting specific start and end times.
One thing that disappointed us was the absence of a one-step download-and-convert function in the free version. If you want the one-step convenience, you'll have to upgrade to Pro ($19.90), which also gives you the capability of downloading multiple videos at once. Also, it would've been nice to be able to name files before downloading them, but that's certainly not a deal-breaker.
For online video enthusiasts looking to download non-copyrighted or personally owned videos, YouTube Downloader appears to be a near-perfect tool. Sure it's missing a few minor conveniences, but its simplicity and the fact that it casts such a wide net of support for online video sites make it virtually unbeatable.

You must run quality security software on your computers to protect your work and private data from viruses, spyware, and other security threats.
When it comes to security, there is no substitute for quality. See below our recommended quality solutions. If any of the following is difficult for you, get an IT Expert to do it for you. You must do the following or risk all of your work/data being compromised (think of it as locking your front door):
- Get good anti virus software e.g. one of the below.

Be sure to regularly update your 'virus definitions' e.g. once per week
- Install a quality Firewall
There are many firewalls available, some good, some bad. Our recommendation is the FREE ZoneAlarm. They provide a paid version with extra tools (of course), but we think the free firewall-only option is fine. Its getting harder on their site to see the free one (so look carefully!). At time of writing, go here, scroll down and click the free option. If the above link doesn't work, start looking from the Zone Alarm front page.
- Install an anti-spyware application
There are many available, some good, some bad. Our recommendation is the FREE: Spybot - Search & Destroy.Download HERE, and find Spybot info here.
- Email Attachments: BEWARE OF ATTACHMENTS. Do not open email attachments you are not expecting. Viruses come with some very nasty messages to trick you into opening the attachement e.g. "Your email account has been cancelled, see attachment for details". Even worse, the virus looks like it comes from an email address you recognise e.g. from admin@yourDomain.com (where 'your domain' is the domain name that you use). Virus attachments can have the following 'file extension': .exe, .pif. If you receive a .zip attachment and open it - make sure it doesn't contain a file with one of those extensions. Do not open attachments you haven't requested, even if they appear to be from people you know.
Why do I receive, notices that emails from me could not be delivered - when I didn't send the email?
- How did someone else send an email that looked like it was from me?
- Why do such emails seem to be from someone who is not in my organisation?
This is usually caused by a virus on someone elses computer sending the emails, but making it look like the emails are from you, or to put it another way: A virus that spoofs the 'from address'. The important (and annoying) thing to note is that the virus is probably not on your computer, it is on someone elses. So even if you have quality anti-virus software that keeps your computer clean, there is someone else out there who's computer is infected and sending these emails out.
How viruses spoof the from-address in emails
- You have effective anti-virus software, so your computer is clean,
- You send an email to Fred,
- Now your email address is in Freds address book in his email software,
- Fred does not have effective anti-virus software, and his computer has a virus,
- The virus on Freds computer scans his address book for all of the email addresses on it,
- The virus sends email to every address on Freds address book,
- The virus emails do not say they are from Fred!, The virus pics another addresse from Fred's address book and puts it in the 'From field' in the outgoing email. The virus may combine the name from one address and the domain from another, creating a 'from address' that does not exist.
- These emails are received by other computers, which detect the virus (because they have good anti virus software) and reject the email,
- When the receiving computer rejects the virused email it sends an 'Undeliverable' to the sender e.g. something like 'Subject: /Delivery Notification: Delivery has failed'.
- But! the 'Undeliverable' note goes to the spoofed from address (not to Fred) e.g. the 'Undeliverable' note could be sent to you.
- Often there is no trace of Freds real address in the virus email or the 'Undeliverable' note, so you can not tell who's infected computer is sending these emails.
The solution: Make sure you have good anti-virus software and tell everyone you know to do the same.

RootkitRevealer is an advanced rootkit detection utility. It runs on Windows NT 4 and higher and its output lists Registry and file system API discrepancies that may indicate the presence of a user-mode or kernel-mode rootkit.
RootkitRevealer successfully detects many persistent rootkits including AFX, Vanquish and HackerDefender (note: RootkitRevealer is not intended to detect rootkits like Fu that don't attempt to hide their files or registry keys).
Since persistent rootkits work by changing API results so that a system view using APIs differs from the actual view in storage, RootkitRevealer compares the results of a system scan at the highest level with that at the lowest level. The highest level is the Windows API and the lowest level is the raw contents of a file system volume or Registry hive (a hive file is the Registry's on-disk storage format).
Thus, rootkits, whether user mode or kernel mode, that manipulate the Windows API or native API to remove their presence from a directory listing, for example, will be seen by RootkitRevealer as a discrepancy between the information returned by the Windows API and that seen in the raw scan of a FAT or NTFS volume's file system structures.

While we love the idea of free TV (who doesn't?), it never seems to be quite what we hoped. FreeZ Online TV is no exception. The channel selection is unimpressive and user guidance is nonexistent.
The most confusing things about the program are the links that appear on the initial screen when the program is opened. We mistakenly believed they might provide more guidance for the program but instead directed us to two different sites promising free online TV. Both require additional downloads, and weren't related to FreeZ Online TV.
That said, once we explored those two false leads, the program itself proved fairly easy to operate, although disappointing in its outcomes. A standard viewing screen sits next to a file tree with 16 main categories, including News, Entertainment, and Weather. Within each category are at least a half dozen channel choices, but many are not in English. Simply click one and it begins playing. The typical media controls to stop, start, pause, etc., become visible at the bottom of the screen as the content buffers. What you won't find are any guides to the channels, which seem randomly selected from various countries around the world. All you get are the call letters (like WSTV) or largely unrecognizable names like NOS Journaal. We also found that many of the listed channels didn't play at all. There are no user settings, so you can't delete or add your own channels, and no Help file or other user guidance is available.
During installation, a box is pre-checked that will add the FreeZ Online TV Toolbar, so be sure to uncheck this if you don't want this little extra. Or, better yet, skip the download altogether and avoid not only the toolbar but this unimpressive program as well.

Compiled HTML Help (CHM) files are frequently used in Windows applications. Batchwork's Batch CHM to Word Converter converts CHM files to Microsoft Word documents singly or in batches. To that end, it integrates a file-specific search feature; drag-and-drop functionality; and the ability to pause, save, and resume conversion jobs in project files using a proprietary format (.batch-doc2chm) in a single, simple interface.
This is a compact tool that downloads, installs, and sets up quickly. The interface is intentionally simple and efficient, with an integrated file menu/toolbar, Source and Target fields, Search and Convert buttons, and main file display. The tool/menu bar includes a full Help file as well as icons for support and updates. Buttons labeled Folder, File, and View call up compact dialogs for browsing to directories; we used it to check our test system for CHM files. The software found hundreds, including the same files in many different languages. We created a target folder in a chosen directory and clicked Convert. Not only did the program quickly convert the large batch of files to Word docs, but it also preserved all the hierarchical folder structure within the target folder, which made it much easier to find specific files. The new Word documents opened normally, and all content appeared intact.
Batch CHM to Word Converter is easy to learn and use, and it's quick and effective at what it does. You probably have more CHM files in your PC than you realize; this tool makes it easy to access them. It's definitely recommended.
